Starpower Donates to Emmitt Smith Golf Tournament

During the weekend a live auction took place and Starpower generously donated a Dallas Cowboys Game Watching Experience with Emmitt Smith. What better way to watch an NFL game than with football legend and Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith. Emmitt will join the winner and 20 friends at your house or a Starpower location near you to watch the winner’s favorite team for the “homegating” experience of a lifetime.
Not only did Starpower generously donate an item for the live auction but the grand prize winner of the poker tournament walked away with a special Championship prize from Starpower. The winner received an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema. This projector puts the viewer in the middle of the action with blockbuster brightness and contrast!

It was a star-studded event with celebrities like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Nancy Lieberman, Kenny Lofton, Barry Sanders, Jason Terry and many more participating in the weekend’s festivities.

The Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational is more than just a weekend celebration and golf; it is also about raising money for charity. Over the first two years of the golf tournament, it has helped raise $600,000 which will be used to further the mission of Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, which is a public charity that creates and funds unique educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for underserved children.
Congratulations again to the Pidgeon’s and Alfredo Roberts for winning the golf tournament!

CES 2015: Preview

Starpower Ces 2015: Preview

CES 2015: The Global Stage for Innovation

CES 2015 is here! The show floor officially opens tomorrow and we are extremely excited to see the newest products and innovations. We will have hands-on impressions, previews, new product announcements, and the latest concepts from the biggest tech companies in the world. What can you expect to see from the world’s most dynamic tech show?

Internet of Things

The most exciting and unique innovation we will see at CES 2015 is the Internet of Things (IoT). Simply put, the Internet of Things is making it possible to connect anything and everything to the Internet.

Imagine a cap on a medicine bottle. The cap is fitted with a sensor which tracks the amount of times the bottle has been opened and when it was opened. The cap would collect this data and connect to an app on a phone or TV. The app could alert you if you need to take medication or if you have already taken it. No more need to worry whether elderly parents or grandparents are taking their medication. This is just a fraction of the possibilities to be unleashed from the Internet of Things.

At CES 2014, there were household appliances, cookware, clothing, even toothbrushes designed to connect via sensors with portable, networked devices like PCs and smartphones. Current examples include smart thermostat systems and washer/dryers that utilize wifi for remote monitoring.

As sensors become cheaper and more commonplace, there will be more and more everyday “things,” from light bulbs to city buses, harnessing the power of the network to provide more utility than ever could have been possible in isolation.

Interactive 4K – Bigger TVs

4K UHD will finally land in 2015! All of the pieces have fallen into place. 4K TVs and projectors are more affordable than their initial launch. Google, Verizon and AT&T are introducing gigabit services in order for consumers to properly stream 4K content. Streaming media services like Netflix and Amazon are bringing 4K content to 4K TVs and projectors.

More than 25 companies will exhibit 4K UHD-related products at the 2015 CES including DISH, Samsung, and Sony. Expect newer lines of 4K TV, interfaces with easier access to online video apps and 4K TVs at every price point. A big announcement is DISH has confirmed they will incorporate 4K streaming into their new line of receivers.

We expect larger 4K screens which will allow consumers to view more content than ever before. Bigger screens allow for multiple uses such as watching a TV show while displaying a security camera window or baby cam in the corner of your screen.

Wearables

Wearables will be everywhere! Ever since Apple revealed the AppleWatch last year, hype for wearable technology is at an all-time high. There have been a vast collection of android watches released last year with the potential to bring everything from home connectivity to fitness tracking to a whole new level. With improvements in sensor technology, consumers can better monitor their daily activity and create smarter fitness goals. Collaborations among sensors, low energy Bluetooth, cloud computing, 3D printing, flexible membranes can allow access to almost everything all at the touch of a wearable device. Don’t expect wearables for just yourself but for pets too. Check out the Tagg GPS Pet Tracker. We expect to see big announcements from Everbrilliant Enterprise Limited, EZIO and even L’Oreal!

High-Resolution Audio

High-Res Audio is changing the way we hear music just as HDTV revolutionized the way we see picture quality. This new audio technology emits audio signals with bandwidth and dynamic range greater than CD quality. Streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora compress audio into MP3s. Streaming MP3 quality music to a new speaker system isn’t doing it justice. New services like Deezer and Neil Young’s Pono service are looking to change that.

Home Automation

The movement to create a smarter and more efficient home increases daily, accelerated by the smartphones and tablets interacting with the myriad of connected objects and devices. At CEDIA, we had the chance to see the direction home automation was moving. Access to multiple locations, customizable scenes and tracking was a key component in the future of home automation. We are excited to see announcements from URC/Total Control and Honeywell. The future of home automation is all about giving homeowners more convenience and more comfort: from basic security monitoring or more customized access to appliances, lighting, window coverings, irrigation, entertainment systems and more.

There will be so much to see in just a couple of days! We will keep you up to date on the latest news at CES. Interact with us on Facebook and Twitter. Send us your questions! What would you like to see at CES? We want you to be the first to hear about the latest in industry changing innovations.

Former Rivals Become Allies in Selling High-End Appliances and Audio, Video

Starpower Former Rivals Become Allies In Selling High-End Appliances And Audio, Video

Starpower and Ed Kellum and Son – Dallas, Texas

In September of 2011 one of our former Rivals became our ally as we merged together to form a new partnership. Kellum Appliances has been a namesake in the Dallas area for decades. Selling high-end, first-class appliances and audio/video, Kellum has been selling products to local families since 1948.  Kellum is very proud of this new relationship and we look forward to many years of success as we meet and exceed the expectaions of customers in the area.

The article below recently appeard in the Dallas Morning News:

From December 28, 2011:

Both parties pleased with Starpower’s acquisition of Ed Kellum & Son

Two former retail rivals are glad they spent this Christmas as a merged company.

Starpower Home Entertainment Systems acquired Ed Kellum & Son Appliance Co. in September after the family-owned and operated businesses had been talking on and off about a deal for several months. Starpower home theater systems has been in business since 1995 and has four stores, including one in Arizona and one at 4615 Cole Ave. in Dallas, three doors down from the Kellum store at 4533 Cole Ave. Both stores will stay open.

“Our first Christmas together went well,” said Starpower chairman Daniel Pidgeon. “Based on the last few years, we’ve been conservative with our expectations. Sales exceeded our plan but gross margins and profits were lower than expected, and that was true across the board in consumer electronics this year.”

Pidgeon, 46, and his brother, Starpower CEO David Pidgeon, 48, are the new generation, said Pat Kellum, who took over the family business from his father in 1981. The Kellum appliance store was founded by the late Ed Kellum in 1948.

“It was time for me to step back and not be the lead person, and I like the way this family deals with their customers,” Kellum said. “I didn’t have a successor, and we wanted someone who would have the best interests of our employees and our 75,000 customers.”

Kellum said it was a good move to “unite versus fighting each other.” In recent years, the business has been hit with a triple whammy: a weak economy, declining prices and eroding margins. This holiday season was the year of the cheap big-screen TV.

The Kellum appliance store’s results also met expectations, and Starpower plans to continue operating it under its longtime name, Pidgeon said. Starpower and Kellum overlap in audio and video categories, but Starpower doesn’t sell appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators, and their customer lists were surprisingly different, he said.

Starpower home theater systems also has 35 crews that install home theaters and media rooms in Dallas and Fort Worth. Kellum had been using a third-party installer to do that work.

Kellum, 63, who started working in the business when he was 12, helping install air conditioners, said that while he no longer has an ownership stake, he remains involved in the business. “If a customer calls me, I still help them.”
