Beginners Guide to 4K TVs - What You Need to Know About 4K

Introduction to 4K

You've heard about 4K and now you want to learn more. 4K is the future of television - if you want to know why, read our feature here. For those dipping your toes in the water and considering a 4K TV, check out our intro to 4K TVs below.

4K TV

4K TVs, also known as UHD, offer a picture quality 4 times the number of pixels found in a full HD set. To be exact, a 4K TV offers 8,294,400 pixels. This high amount of pixels creates images that are crisper and capable of showing incredible detail, much more than a standard TV. Starpower, located in the Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas area and Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona area, offers a number of 4K TVs ranging from 40” to 70”+ from top manufacturers, including Samsung, Sony and LG.

What is 4K Resolution?

In the way most TVs define resolution, 4K resolution is 3840X2160 or 2160p. A full HD resolution is 1920X1080. A 4K TV has four times the pixels as a regular HD set.

The 4K TV earned its name because the images are approximately 4000 pixels wide. The more pixels a TV offers, the more information it holds, leading to sharper images.

What is the Difference Between a 4K TV and Ultra HD?

4K TV is the most commonly used name for TVs that produce 3840X2160 pixels, but some brands prefer to use the term Ultra HD, or UHD. There is actually logic behind the UHD term. That's because it provides a way of distinguishing between the 3840 x 2160 resolution adopted by 16:9 ratio TVs and the slightly different 4096x2160 resolution first introduced in digital cinemas.

What can Viewers Expect from a 4K TV?

A lot! 4K viewers can expect more depth and more color resolution from the extra 4000 pixels. Images will be extremely life-like. It will make the viewer feel like they are looking through a window instead of watching TV.

Many viewers prefer a screen size of 65 inches and greater since 4K is most effective on larger screens, even though any size provides a viewing improvement from the standard HD. Viewers agree that sitting closer to the screen makes them appreciate the crisp images and extra resolution even more. The higher pixel density enables viewers to get much closer than a traditional HD set without seeing the grid-like structure of the actual image.
